Having started on site more than 1,000 days ago, the M2 junction 5 improvements scheme on behalf of National Highways has reached a momentous milestone with the first members of public traveling on the Stockbury flyover today (Wednesday 10th July), ahead of a lane opening in each direction during overnight closures later this week.

As part of our improvements the flyover passes over the Stockbury Roundabout, providing free flowing movement on the A249, helping to improve journey times and safety at this busy junction.

The team welcomed local farmer and scheme supporter Matt Barnes, who proudly drove his tractor over the flyover, adding a touch of community spirit to the occasion.

Following the visit, Matt said:

“National Highways and GRAHAM have been extremely professional in both keeping traffic flowing, providing me with information to share with my thousands of followers interested in the work, but most importantly looking out for the welfare of their staff to get these works completed promptly but safely."

Stevie Collins, GRAHAM Project Manager said:

“Witnessing the first drivers using the flyover today is a true testament to the collaborative spirit fostered throughout the project with the local community.

The opening marks a significant milestone and the timing couldn’t be better, as it will significantly ease traffic congestion just ahead of the summer holidays.

There is still more work to do, as we continue to carry out these improvements.”

Daniel Rollinson, National Highways Project Manager said:

“As we head towards to the final stages of the project, we are pleased to celebrate this significant milestone on the M2J5 improvement scheme, as the first members of the public will be able to cross this new flyover when we open it tomorrow morning.

I want to thank everyone that has helped us get to this point t we make these essential upgrades that will allow for quicker, smoother, and safer journeys. There are still works to be done which will require closures as we work towards completion this winter, I thank the public for remaining patient.”
