GRAHAM has successfully completed a £220,000 programme of essential repairs to a critical water main that delivers water from Ballinrees Reservoir to Portrush, Portstewart, and the wider Coleraine area in Northern Ireland.
Originally installed in 1982, the pipeline required significant maintenance to ensure its continued reliability. Works commenced at the beginning of September and were completed ahead of schedule at the end of October.
The project focused on replacing a 240-metre section of the pipeline, which is part of the approximately 12km ring main around Coleraine. This critical infrastructure supplies water to around 19,000 homes, making its upkeep vital for the community.
In addition to the pipeline replacement, the project included the restoration of metal support brackets on a section of the water main that crosses the A29 Ring Road at Sandelford Bridge. These repairs were identified as part of Northern Ireland Water's ongoing Infrastructure Appraisals Project, which involves an investment of approximately £3.5 million to assess and maintain critical infrastructure.
The repair work involved treating corroded brackets and replacing all support fixings, significantly enhancing the integrity and lifespan of the support system. These measures are crucial for safeguarding the water supply to the north coast region.
To facilitate the work, GRAHAM utilised Height for Hire’s Bridge Inspection Unit, which provided several benefits over traditional scaffolding. This approach eliminated the need for lengthy lane and footpath closures, allowed for daily demobilisation, and resulted in major cost and time savings.
GRAHAM is delighted to have completed this project ahead of schedule, ensuring the continued provision of a reliable water supply to the residents of Coleraine and the surrounding areas.
