Cheshire East Council has appointed GRAHAM to deliver the much-needed A523 Poynton Relief Road to relieve long-standing traffic congestion issues.
The scheme links the A555 at Chester Road in the north to the A523 London and Adlington Golf Centre to the south. Early design activities are due to begin in November, with the construction scheduled to begin next July.
The new 3km single carriageway road includes the upgrades of two off-site junctions at Adlington Crossroads and Bonis Hall Lane.
Among the features includes:
- A new structure to allow the Poynton Relief Road to pass beneath the existing A5149 Chester Road.
- Two new accommodation bridges.
- A cycleway and footway facility adjacent to the scheme.
- Two new balancing ponds.
- Accommodation works for adjacent landowners.
- Environmental Mitigation for Great Crested Newts and other flora and fauna.
The appointment of GRAHAM follows a competitive tendering process involving several other bidders. The scheme is made up of a 27-month contract with 60-months aftercare.
Poynton and the surrounding area suffer from longstanding traffic congestion issues, largely due to the high level of demand for travel from areas in Cheshire East to Manchester, Manchester Airport and Stockport.
Our Managing Director – Civil Engineering, Leo Martin, says the Poynton Relief Road is strategically important and will bring long-term benefits to the region.
He said:
“This is a real coup for us and we are relishing the prospect of collaborating with Cheshire East Council on this important project that will bring both economic and social regeneration to the north of Cheshire East.
“With over 15 years of experience in delivering similar, complex highways projects throughout the UK, we will be tapping into this expertise to ensure completion of the relief road to the very highest standards.
“Traffic has been a considerate challenge particularly in the Poynton and Macclesfield areas, which has resulted in a range of negative impacts for residents, motorists and the environment. This new relief road will serve to vastly reduce congestion. But this scheme will do so much more, proving a boost to the local economy and create new avenues for growth.”
The Poynton Relief Road is the second major contract to be awarded to GRAHAM by Cheshire East Council, with the construction of the 5.5km Congleton Link Road at the hallway point. This links the A536 Macclesfield Road to the north, with the A534 Sandbach Road to the west.
Work also falls within Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council for which GRAHAM recently completed the £8 million Travis Brow Link Road, creating a vital link between the A6 and M60 in Stockport town centre.
The Travis Brow Link Road was named Project of the Year at the 2019 Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) North West Awards.
Mr Martin added:
“The Poynton Relief Road represents yet another major highways scheme in the ongoing programme of infrastructure development across Cheshire East and Greater Manchester areas, delivering further economic growth for the economies and creating jobs and business opportunities for the area.”
