Youth Engagement Day at Kenton School Newcastle

On the 7th May, Alan Millar and David Jamison attended a Youth Engagement Day at Kenton School in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The day was run in conjunction with GAM’s PPF partners (Aptus Construction, Robertson, and Tilbury Douglas) and involved approximately thirty Year 9 students engaging in various construction and facilities management related activities.

The day started with talks on different pathways into the industry from roles such as Design Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Project/Contracts Manager and more. Then groups were split into tables focused on either more in-depth construction role explanations, or CV writing and interview skills. This was followed by a personality quiz, where students learnt about the various personality types and which ones matched theirs.

The day finished with an in-depth development challenge, where students designed and produced a model layout of a sustainable, mixed housing development, as well as creating a tender document and presenting their ideas. The aim of this activity was to encourage participants to consider some of the key themes involved in sustainable design; introduce participants to some of the professional and management careers in construction; and emphasize teamwork, time management, finance, and presentation skills.

Thank you to Alan and David for attending the event and engaging with the students at Kenton School, where they’ve inspired and made a lasting impact upon the next generation.
