National Railway Museum, Station Hall, York

The GRAHAM team in York are currently replacing the National Railway Museum’s Grade II listed roof structure at Station Hall, a former goods station (built 1875-77) and now home to the museum’s 6 royal carriages.

Before work could commence the rail vehicles in the hall had to be protected to enable building work to take place around them, without disturbing the priceless exhibits.

This level of protection allowed close monitoring of humidity, temperature and air quality levels to ensure that the collection remains protected throughout.

The new roof will provide a thermally efficient and weather tight solution to protect the museum’s collection of unique locomotive engines and carriages.

The programme of work will also see the wooden doors at the rear and side of the hall being removed and replaced by thermally efficient glazing, allowing views to the South yard, whilst still adhering to the building’s Victorian heritage.

The team have installed 2 new internal ramps and 1 external ramp for ease of access for the public along with in-keeping heritage balustrading and refurbishment of the original sliding doors.

There has also been an upgrade in the heating system, exhibition lighting and a new fire suppression system; as well as some general updating of office finishes and exhibition rooms.
